Custom Pieces, Pendulum Boards and Mini Signs… Oh My!

Merry Freya’s Day WoodSprites!

I have been busy, busy, busy!  I hope you all had a most joyous Summer Solstice or Winter Solstice, depending on what side of this lovely green planet you live on.  We celebrated at home, just my wee clan and I but we did visit the Mutton & Mead Festival in Massachusetts and had a fantastic time.  I mean who wouldn’t want to cheer your favorite knight on in a joust, visit with woodland creatures of all sorts,  devour a smoked turkey leg, and wander the market place looking for your next treaure!

My handsome lads with the talented Vixens En Garde!

The shop has been growing inch by inch and row by row (throw back to John Denver, not sure if he was the original but he’s who I remember singing it!).   I have been blessed to do a couple custom orders (still working on one of them), and filling a nice size order for Violet Flame Gifts in Newark Ohio, a few altars and a couple this and that orders.  Somehow in the middle of all this I managed to create 3 new pendulum designs and 3 new mini signs for the shop!

So let’s take a peek at what I have been up to shall we?

I was contacted by a lovely lady who has a bit of a cheeky pup named Barron, this lively pooch has a habit of being outside when thought to be inside or vice versa.  So I was contacted to create a Lil Asshole (her plucky nic-name from her loving family) is in/out sign to help them know if she was inside or outside!  Here’s a look at what I made:

So if you didn’t know we can and do custom orders… Now you know! 😉

On to the shops new items!

We now have for your pleasure…

Crow & Roses Yes/No Pendulum board

Sugar Skull (re-designed) Yes/No Pendulum Board

Papa Legba Yes/No Pendulum Board

And brand new to the shop mini signs!

Blessed Be Mini Sign

The quaint little signs are only $10.00 perfect for gifts or for yourself!

So as you can see I have been busy, busy, busy!  And I’m still not done!  I will be finishing up two orders today and then focusing on some new items/designs for the shop, like my lovely tribute to The Green Man & Wood Wife oak altars.  These original designs are stunning and I am super excited about them!  Here’s a peek at where I am with them.

GrnMannLadyProgress

I still have to paint the leaves, eyes and this and that, I have decided to leave the altar top unstained, the red oak is just too pretty and I really like how they will have the color.  So with a little luck and a lot of hard work I am hoping to have them shop ready sometime next week!

Oh and you may (or may not) have noticed I re-designed An October Monday’s banner… I think I love it! For those wondering why there is a miniature schnauzer instead of a traditional black cat on the broom, well that is tribute to my whimsical little pup Quimber! Who can always be found in her chair next to me while I work on creating all these wonderful wood whimsies!

Some New Things Are Brewing @ An October Monday

Happy, happy Saturday WoodSprites!

Things here in the wood studio have been buzzing with New Products and some big changes… but the changes are for another day 😉

Today I am super excited to say we are now offering our All Natural Magickal Blend Wood Polish in our Etsy Shop!  But why are our wood polishes magickal you may be wondering.  Well it’s all about what goes into it of course!  Our wood polish is made right here in our home and created with a custom signature blend of essential oils crafted by Heather Killen owner of Violet Flame Gifts in Newark OH.  We use organic beeswax and olive oil and blend in our essential oil that was created with the 3 P’s in mind, prosperity, protection and purification!

We use our polish on all of our wood creations and are super happy to now be offering them to you.  We have two sizes an 8 oz and 1 oz size (the 1 oz is perfect for keeping with all your magickal supplies!)  Our wood polish has a subtle deep earthy fragrance, one that is very natural and won’t over power you like harsh chemical cleaners and  are created to help preserve the life and beauty of  your wood. We also wanted to add a wee bit of magick because every home should be a magickal place.  ♥

Handcrafted Spirit Boards by An October Monday

Spirit boards have been around for quite some time and is linked with the beginning of modern Spiritualism.  Soon the well known “The Ouija” would come to be in 1890 but before “The Ouija” was the “Witch Board” created by W. S. Reed Toy Company 1886.   There were and are still many variations of talking boards and An October Monday is proud to create our own style of Spirit Board.

Our boards are all handcrafted and can be custom ordered to suite any individuals needs.  They are crafted from birch wood and for those of you with a magickal mind know birch is believed to ward off evil, banish fears and build courage, so it seemed appropriate to use in creating our spirit boards.  Our boards are not small and  measure 24″ x 16″, perfect for placing on two laps or on a table top for larger gatherings.

The next step in creating one of our boards is the artwork, I tend to use vintage inspired art, our favorite of course is witches and Halloween, but we do offer a lovely angel board inspired by the Lee family ♥  After the design is chosen it is then hand drawn unto the board and then the fun begins!  Fire writing, also known as pyrography or wood burning the design into the wood. Side note: these are all hand burned, no laser, no big machine, sadly a common thing I am now seeing is laser etched/burned pieces being sold as pyrography pieces.  And though they have their own beauty and appeal the process is much different.  Whew… okay back on track 😉

The burning process takes the most time and depending on the art work can be a few days worth of work.  Once the burning is done some items are then hand painted or given certain embellishments. Next, we begin the staining process, we use several types of vinegar to stain our woods.  The vinegar stains give an old world charm and feel to each piece and bring out the character of the wood.  Of course we can and do at times leave the wood natural.

Once the staining is done the spirit boards are then given 9 coats of polyurethane.  This is the second longest process as each coat is applied and allowed to dry completely before the next coat is done, it is hand sanded after every 3rd coat to give a completely smooth surface for the planchette.  Once the polyurethane process is complete each board is polished with our own bees wax wood polish brewed here in our own kitchen.  We are careful to add special essential oils to our wood polish for an extra magickal kick!

Now on to our planchette… You may have noticed it is not the typical pointer style of planchette but rather it is round and notched to view letters, numbers or words.  This is simply our spin on the lovely planchette and is slightly similar to the “Kirby’s Planchette” of the 1860’s.  All our boards have a creation date burned on the bottom of the planchette so as the spirit board is handed down to a new generation they will know the “birth” date of these beautiful heirloom spirit boards.  We also proudly burn or logo on the back of each spirit board so it’s origin can be fully traced.

We currently have 3 styles to choose from and as mentioned before we love to create custom pieces!  So here is a peek at our 3 Sisters, HeavenLee Messages and Boo~tiful Spirits, spirit boards!

Earth Warriors Festival 2014

Merry Monday Evening WoodSprites!

I have been a busy wood witch lately so I am going to try and catch up with a few blog posts over the next few days.  Some of you may, or may not, know that An October Monday attended the Earth Warriors Festival in late August.  It was our first festival and we certainly were not let down!  Although we did not vend at this festival (we were on vacation) we were blessed to have items available in the Violet Flame Gifts booth! (Thank you Heather Killen!) Not only did we have a few of our handcrafted goodies for sale there prior to the festival we were commissioned to create the Earth Warriors Festival Targe/Coat of Arms.  I had mentioned we were working on this piece in earlier post but now I can share some photos of the EWF Targe.

It was such an honor to work on this beautiful piece and it made me so happy to see it hanging proudly above the main stage for the entire festival.  I forgot to grab photos of the back but it is equipped with leather strap and handle so it can be held and 2 D-rings, one on the bottom and top for hanging.  The whole process from the start to finish was wonderful and An October Monday was truly blessed to create the Earth Warriors Festival piece.

So what else is new?  Well plenty of course!  And I shall return with a few more blog posts this week.  Thanks for stopping by and if your’ looking for a custom work please feel free to send us a message… We’d love to create something magickal for you!

Until next time…

Hold on to Your Happy, Laugh till it hurts and Live in Love,
J.

Card Readings ~ Reveal Your Future ;)

Okay maybe not, but I did foresee a beautiful, handcrafted, gypsy inspired, 5 card spread, one of a kind tarot card serving tray!  And here it is…

This is one of a kind artwork and the first of its kind, I should know I created it inspired by the Deviant Moon Tarot Card Table I created for my personal use.  I wanted more than just a tarot card cloth, although there are beautiful ones, I wanted something more.  So Robert crafted a beautiful table for me and I did all the artwork… It turned out gorgeous.

If you’d like to see more photos visit An October Monday’s Etsy Shop.

But my table got me thinking about creating something a wee more portable but just as beautiful and practical, and the Tarot Card Serving Tray idea was born!  It is my hope to create many tarot trays and tables, in many unique and whimsical designs!  I have even started on a Boo~tiful Halloween 3 Card Tarot Spread Tray, but more about that at another time.

So I’m done, finished, and complete and one proud creator of the Tarot Card Serving Tray!  Now I am excited to see who will be the new owner of this stunning one of a kind piece.

Okay time to go and get my crafty on, so until next time…
