Hear Ye, Hear Ye ~ Summer Fun and Wood Whimsies

Merry Saturday WoodSprites!

Today is sunny and warm and I have lots to do.  So I won’t bah blah on for too long (well maybe).  Speaking of warm weather how many of you are going to any summer festivals?  I am for sure!  I have plans to head on over to Massachusetts Mutton & Mead Medieval Festival  next week, then in July I am off to Women’s Warrior Retreat but the one I am really excited for is Earth Warriors Festival in September.

Earth Warriors is a smaller festival but it reminds us that we are all one people, all connected and being there is like coming home.  So if you still figuring out what festivals to attend this summer check out Earth Warriors with performance from the super talented Kellianna, the amazing Pictus, and more.  Wonderful presenters such as: Jacki Smith, Devin Hunter, Carlo Hawk Walker, Infinity Forge, Soolah Hoops and many more (plus you can stop by and visit me at the Violet Flame Gifts booth!).  So come gather round the fire, listen to the beat of the drums and know you are part of something at the Earth Warriors Festival!

Now time for An October Monday Shop update…

This week we added 3 more whimsical woodcrafts!

Once Upon A Time, in the land of fairies, gargoyles and satyr…

Handcrafted Spirit Boards by An October Monday

Spirit boards have been around for quite some time and is linked with the beginning of modern Spiritualism.  Soon the well known “The Ouija” would come to be in 1890 but before “The Ouija” was the “Witch Board” created by W. S. Reed Toy Company 1886.   There were and are still many variations of talking boards and An October Monday is proud to create our own style of Spirit Board.

Our boards are all handcrafted and can be custom ordered to suite any individuals needs.  They are crafted from birch wood and for those of you with a magickal mind know birch is believed to ward off evil, banish fears and build courage, so it seemed appropriate to use in creating our spirit boards.  Our boards are not small and  measure 24″ x 16″, perfect for placing on two laps or on a table top for larger gatherings.

The next step in creating one of our boards is the artwork, I tend to use vintage inspired art, our favorite of course is witches and Halloween, but we do offer a lovely angel board inspired by the Lee family ♥  After the design is chosen it is then hand drawn unto the board and then the fun begins!  Fire writing, also known as pyrography or wood burning the design into the wood. Side note: these are all hand burned, no laser, no big machine, sadly a common thing I am now seeing is laser etched/burned pieces being sold as pyrography pieces.  And though they have their own beauty and appeal the process is much different.  Whew… okay back on track 😉

The burning process takes the most time and depending on the art work can be a few days worth of work.  Once the burning is done some items are then hand painted or given certain embellishments. Next, we begin the staining process, we use several types of vinegar to stain our woods.  The vinegar stains give an old world charm and feel to each piece and bring out the character of the wood.  Of course we can and do at times leave the wood natural.

Once the staining is done the spirit boards are then given 9 coats of polyurethane.  This is the second longest process as each coat is applied and allowed to dry completely before the next coat is done, it is hand sanded after every 3rd coat to give a completely smooth surface for the planchette.  Once the polyurethane process is complete each board is polished with our own bees wax wood polish brewed here in our own kitchen.  We are careful to add special essential oils to our wood polish for an extra magickal kick!

Now on to our planchette… You may have noticed it is not the typical pointer style of planchette but rather it is round and notched to view letters, numbers or words.  This is simply our spin on the lovely planchette and is slightly similar to the “Kirby’s Planchette” of the 1860’s.  All our boards have a creation date burned on the bottom of the planchette so as the spirit board is handed down to a new generation they will know the “birth” date of these beautiful heirloom spirit boards.  We also proudly burn or logo on the back of each spirit board so it’s origin can be fully traced.

We currently have 3 styles to choose from and as mentioned before we love to create custom pieces!  So here is a peek at our 3 Sisters, HeavenLee Messages and Boo~tiful Spirits, spirit boards!

To Borrow from Brave…

Happy Monday Wild Flowers!

Now don’t be so down, Monday is not a bad thing if we think of it as a fresh start to a week full of unknown adventures!  How was your weekend?  Mine was too fast!  But it was full of crafty things, frustration with Have You Seen Harry files (ugh!), Girl Scouts and just hanging out with me clan.

Today I thought I would start a new category for our wood projects, so I borrowed from my favorite Disney movie Brave and named it The Crafty Carver!  How I love the whimsical little crone and her cottage in the woods!

"BRAVE"

So let’s take a look at some of the crafty projects we worked on over the weekend.  As I mentioned before we are in the process of creating new artwork for our office, the theme medieval dragons.  So last week I spent some time pouring through photos of medieval woodcut designs, there are some great woodcuts and so many to choose from.  Somehow I managed to narrow it down to a few choices that the clan and me really liked.  So I set off to create the first piece for the office.

First creation for the office!

First creation for the office!

So there it is in 3 different stages of the process… Now I am trying to decide if I should add vibrant colors (normal for medieval period) or my beautiful sister-in-law suggested an antiquing/oil type of staining… What says you?  I’d love to hear some suggestions!  I really was hoping to work on my tarot table too but there were simply not enough hours in the weekend!

Now what was my handsome husband up too all this time?  Wood Work!  Lots and lots of it.  He managed to create 9 new wooden plaques for me to do artwork/pyrography  on, he made me a WONDERFUL crafting table on casters so I can roll to any location at home to work and he made himself a “feed” table/ work table for his table saw and shop (looks like my craft table just bigger).

My new craft table!

My new craft table!

So this is my craft table before a shelf for storage was added.  Today I will be painting the top black and adding a poly coat to the beautiful wood legs.  It is such an awesome piece he made just for me and I love it!  Once they are finished I will post pictures.

Okay, Wild Flowers my day calls to me so many projects to work on and as always never enough hours in the day!

That’s it! Ta-ta! Oh, and thank you for stopping by October Monday, we hope you’ll come back soon!
